It is the descendants of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, that formed one faction in the War of the Roses. The Lancasters were represented by the red rose. The split was finally resolved when Henry Tudor, himself a Lancaster, married John of Gaunt's descendant, Elizabeth York, and joined the two houses of York and Lancaster.
