http://members.nbci.com/HerndonPage/In the Herndon Family of Virginia Vol I, The First Three Generations by John Goodwin Herndon, Ph.D. Dr. Herndon says he had "a tremendous collection of well arranged data pertaining to the English Herndons from the middle of the 15th century until the end of the 17th in addition to miscellaneous records of their Herndon's ancestors from 1170 to 1450 as well as charters granted to the Herndon community in Kent by King Ethelred in 833 and renewed in 968. Various spellings were used but the preferred was "Hernden". About this time the Herndon community was established in and around Tenterden, Kent County, England. By now the preferred spelling was "Herndon". In his book, Dr. Herndon stated that so far as he knew there were three white Herndon families in the United States; one in Virginia; one in Rhode Island and the third in Canada. Benjamin settled early in Rhode Island and died there in 1687. He had a wife, Elizabeth White, and sons Joseph, William, John, Thomas, Isaac, and as well as daughters, Sarah, Alice, and Mary. This family has been thoroughly traced in Austin's "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island" and is probably related in England to the ancestors of William Herndon of Virginia. In the 1850's another member of the English family, spelling his name Hernden, settled in Canada. His two sons moved to Ohio and their descendants lived in Florida.
This web site tells of the William Herndon family who settled in Virginia. William married in 1677 in Virginia. William's wife, based on circumstantial evidence, is believed to be Catherine Digges, daughter of Governor Edward Digges. She was born in 1656 in Hampton, VA and died in 1729 in Caroline Co, VA. Edward Digges entered Grey's Inn May 19, 1637, and came to Virginia in 1650, settling at "Belfield" on York River. He was a member of the Council in 1654, Auditor-General 1670-75, and Governor from March 31, 1655, to march, 1657. His wife, Elizabeth, who died about 1691, is believed to have been a sister of Colonel John Page, of York County, Virginia. His tomb bears evidence to his being the "Sonne of Sir Dudley Digges, Knight and Baronet, Master of the Rolls in the reign of King Charles I.
The union of William Herndon and Catherine Digges produced three sons, Edward, James and William. Soon after arriving from England , William was granted parcels of land in New Kent County on the NE side of Mattagoni River, 1,800, 64, 430 and 1,000 acres "due by and for transportation of 36 persons, 1 person, 9 persons, and 20 persons". This system provided for dispersing new settlers into the outposts of the colonies and developing agriculture. He individually owned 430 and 64 acres. He was taxed to cooperate in surveying and road building.
He patented land February 18, 1673 in St. Stephen's Parrish, New Kent Co, VA, later found in King & Queen Co, VA.
