Notes for Emperor Charlemagne
Charlemagne, King of the Franks, Emperor of the West born 742 died 814. Charlemagne marries Desiderata, daughter of the Lombard King Desiderius. He married Hildegarde daughter of Gerold I, Count in Vinzgau second.
The Pope wrote the following warning to Charlemagne in response to the news of his marriage to the Lombard princess...
"Saint Peter himself, prince of the apostles, guardian of the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven... commands you not to wed the daughter of the Lombard King... Should you do what is unpleasing to God and have the temerity to ignore our protests, be warned that by the authority of Saint Peter you are then under the most fearful curse, an outcast from the kingdom of God and doomed with the devil and his most wicked assistants and all impious men to the eternal flames."
Though Charlemagne was highly devout, the letter did not scare him, and he went on to marry Desiderata. Within a year, Charles would divorce her for the simple fact that he did not like her, and married Hildegarde (who at the time was only 12 or 13, though this was common among Frankish custom.) Hildegarde proved to be a good wife who bore Charles 4 sons and 5 daughters.
